Internet News Blog

It has been ages since I spent any time in a caravan, but once again my in laws invited us away for the bank holiday weekend and here we are. I am sitting at the window of our tiny static caravan looking out over the touring caravan site spoiling my view of the sea. I still wanted the internet so before we left we picked up a mobile broadband dongle and have had no problems getting going on it.
We are staying at a site near Newcastle which is ideally located for the beach. That is if it was warm enough to actually leave the caravan. The highlight of the morning is watching the people emerging from their tents in their dressing gowns and huddling together until they reach the toilet block.
Then they seem to spend the rest of the day walking backwards and forwards collecting water. One of the caravans near us even had a fire and they threw their pan outside really close to their car. Now I have seen the Top gear episode where they go caravanning and have a fire, but I thought it was all set up, but everything that happened on that episode has happened in the two days we have so far been here. A fire, caravan crashes and bored, unhappy looking people.
From my spacious static caravan with running water and a gas fire, I just cannot see the charm of the tourer, especially in the cold and wet spell we are currently experiencing.
Possibly worse than staying in these caravans, is being subjected to the sites entertainment. We went for the Friday night (our first night), stayed half an hour and left again never to return. Not exactly an overview of the entertainment as a whole, but with the locality to Newcastle city and many other towns within easy reach there really was no draw for the on site amenities.
