I finally got around to starting to build my raised beds. I had read up about raised beds and how treated wood can be bad for the plants but in the end I don’t care about organically grown veg in the super market so I am not bothered at home either. So I decided to buy treated wood from B&Q. I headed off with the measurements I wanted to go price it up. In the end for what I wanted it would of cost over £150, which was too much. I needed a new plan.
After a bit of searching I found a timber yard close buy which would give me all the timber I needed for only £80 which was mush better and it even included delivery. So I had my wood sitting in the back garden waiting to be cut and put together. My original plan was to hammer in my posts (I used arris board from B&Q cut to 40cm lengths and sharpened one end to a point) and then attach the boards to the posts. It didn’t take to long to discover that it wasn’t going to work. I couldn’t get the posts in perfectly vertical and in the exact place I wanted them. So my wife came to the rescue with her plan to butt the planks up against each other in the correct place and screw them together. After that attach the posts to each plank so everything is in the correct position.
I have made one this way so far and it looks really good. They are 25cm high (2 X 12.5cm planks) and 1.5 meters long, 1 meters wide. Now all I have to do is find a place to get some top soil from, it can be very expensive to buy it from gardening centres.
