Future of the Internet

October 25th, 2009

I was worried about today because it is the first time that I was to spend the whole day with my brother in law.  I thought that possibly we would not have much to talk about but we soon found a topic we were both interested in, technology.  He mainly talked about the Playstation 3 and the new games he was playing from Japan, but he also complained about his current Internet connection.  Because he is living in a flat there is not a fixed LAN line so he has to rely on a USB dongle from the 3 Network.  He is suffering from an unreliable and very slow connection which can make it unusable for what he needs it for.

His main usage is to talk to friends in Japan, he lived there for a while with his wife and is still learning the language from his friends with a weekly lesson.  As he doesn’t have a LAN line he doesn’t have any telephones in his apartment.  Using his mobile it would cost a fortune which is why he always uses a VOIP phone system to talk to them.  With the unreliable connection the voice quality he gets can be very low and often he has to reschedule to try another time.

I think it is amazing the way the Internet has advanced; why I was young no one I knew had DSL Internet now it is standard for most people.  What will be the next step up from DSL.  Apparently one of my brother in laws friend currently has a business Internet connection to his house, but with business sdsl connections having a low availability to the public it will be a few more years until connection like that become available wide spread.  I don’t doubt that it will happen though, with the ever increasing demand put on the Internet and the need for people to share experiences over the net ever increasing soon we will need a faster up load connection.

What will the future internet look like.  We from searching on the internet there are ideas of virtual reality where we can set up ultra realistic environments to share with friends from all over the world.  I for one can not wait to see what is going to happen next.
