I have recently been spending a little bit more time with my Grandma than I usually do. This is mainly because she is getting very confused about things at the moment, and as she is living with my parents it is tiring them out a lot. She is very easy to entertain, most of the shops around at the moment are new to her as she has not been to a retail park, and hasn’t been shopping her self for about 20 years.
This week end we took her to Ikea to give my Mum a break while she starts to do her tax returns. She was amazed by it all, at first she didn’t really understand the concept about picking what you wanted and then collecting it all from the warehouse at the end. In the end we only brought a plant for her room, but she did choose a wardrobe she would like to replace her old one. The main thing she enjoyed was the food there, she was amazed by the meat balls, I don’t think she had anything like them before.
After our trip we took her back to my house she couldn’t remember what she liked so with a quick search on the Ikea website we had found the one she liked and printed it out so she could show my Mum. She could not believe that it was possible to do all this and foolishly I tried to explain it all to her. After half an hour of sitting in front of the laptop trying to explain what the Internet was and how it used our phone system to get the webpages, but to someone who the word broadband is completely alien it is beyond me to explain. I she said she would like a laptop for herself, but I don’t think it is a good idea.
One the way home new technology was brought up again, this time when my phone rang while I was driving. I hate to see people using their phone while driving so always remember to use my bluetooth head set when ever I go anywhere. This time she understood a little better, she knew what a mobile phone was, but has never had one and really like the idea of using a little head set to talk to people. She has decided that she wants a mobile phone so she can always be in contact with people. I don’t think the latest ones are very suitable for her to use as there are too many gadgets built in and she has enough trouble using the home phone. My mum has come up with a brilliant option, she has found a mobile phone that only has 6 buttons. There are 4 programmable buttons that let you call four different numbers, an accept call button and a cancel call button. Hopefully it will make her feel a bit happier having her own phone to use.
