Obsession with cook books

September 9th, 2009

I have rather an obsession with cook books.  It sounds strange when I come to write it because I don’t actually cook from them very often.  The only time I ever consult them is when we have a dinner party and I want to cook something special.  I mention this because my mother in law wanted to know the cook book I got my favourite recipe from, banana bread.  The thing is I am not actually sure where it came from, but I know it wasn’t a book.  I have been making it so long that no reference is necessary and I just pour everything into a bowl (my kind of recipe).

I probably own about 50 cook books and that is a conservative estimate.  Because people know that I enjoy cooking, I get bought cook books and gadgets for every birthday and Christmas.  I quite like this as I like looking for new ideas but the storage situation is getting quite desperate.  My wife has confined my cook book collection to a small cupboard in the kitchen, which is now unfortunately full.

I have decided to get myself out of my current meal rut and cook at lest one new thing out of the cook books each week. This week I am going to have a bash at onion and cheese bread, from a book simply titled Bread.  I have cooked plain breads before but have always been disappointed by the final taste, hopefully adding the extra ingredients will help to make it tastier.

I also can’t help myself when it comes to picking up the supermarket free magazines, although these are obviously a blatant advertisement for the store they often have some great recipes in them. Somerfield has a particularly good one with tons of food ideas.  The good thing about the supermarket magazines is that they have the seasonal food in them which gives them the edge over books, plus its guilt free to just throw them out when your done, they were free anyway.
