Folk week review

September 5th, 2009

It hasn’t yet been over for a week, but I am already looking forward to Whitby Folk Week 2010.  This year we booked and paid for our apartment and my in laws came to stay as guests, next year they are repaying the favour, so the accommodation is already sorted.  The problem is, I have already been warned that I may not get the time off work next year and the cost of season tickets for the week’s entertainment is rising.  This year we each paid £125 for our tickets (added to the apartment cost, this makes folk week cost about £1000 for a family of 4) We worked out that paying on the door for the events which we attended would have cost us £145 each, which is quite a saving, however we did go to many events just to get full use of our ticket.

There were not actually as many events that interested us this year as in previous years, so we went to many ‘unknown’ events.  I must say that despite reservations, I really enjoyed everything we did and found some new artists which I shall be looking forward to seeing in the area.

The highlights of the festival for me where seeing John Connolly (the singer songwriter who penned Fiddlers Green) singing a collection of his humorous songs like grumpy old men of old England, a hilarious song about the tribulations of getting older.   I also enjoyed the songs of Colum Sands, his rapport with the audience is brilliant, and I particularly enjoyed the mule song, the chorus of which he expected the audience to be able to sing after hearing it twice through.  The Wilsons as always were on form, their voices quite literally blow you away.  I was also impressed with the storytelling talent of Shonaleigh, her energy and presence is perfect for telling stories.  The only gripe, was we didn’t see her enough; there were lots less story telling sessions this year, which was disappointing, bring back stories in the rowing club… please.
