Whitby regatta

August 30th, 2009

As I have already mentioned Whitby Folk Week 2009 has just finished.  It was a fantastic week, I love going to Whitby anyway but folk week just makes it better.  This year was different to any other week I have been because it was the regatta as well for the starting weekend.

We got there last Saturday and it was absolutely packed, but we got very lucky and get a parking space on the royal crescent.  For the first two days we didn’t do much to do with folk week as there was to much to do with the regatta on.  One of the things that I have always wanted to see was the red arrows and they were booked to arrive on the Sunday.  I had seen them earlier in the year going over Melton Mowbray Show, but was very disappointed when they just flew in a straight line over the town and that was it.  The display was fantastic, they flew over the sea near the west cliff and I was amazed by them.  I could not believe how accurately they flew.

After the Red arrows the other big event from the regatta was the fire works on Monday night.  My wife has been to Whitby when the regatta was on before when they had fireworks going up behind the Abbey on the East cliff.  We thought that we had a good position on a bank on the West cliff with a clear view of the abbey, then the fire works started.  They were being set off on one of the piers, which was directly behind a bush from us, all we could see was a few twinkling lights between the branches.  So after a bit of a shuffle around the bush we got to see the rest of the display.  They were quite good and I would like to see them again next year (the regattas on at the same time next year as well).

I am looking forward to seeing the regatta next year as well, and now we know where to stand for the fire works so it will be even better.
