Changing the way we get TV

August 30th, 2009

If I think of a house I always think of a two storey building with a chimney pot with an aerial attached to it.  But it looks like the years of the aerial on every house is numbered with the advancements in IPTV.  Instead of getting the television signal through an aerial or dish soon it could be broadband the brings us a television signal using IPTV.

I have not really heard much about IPTV but it looks like ITV could soon to be the first one to offer it if the deal goes ahead with Hulu.  If ITV go through with it then it won’t be long until the BBC, channel 4 and UKTV quickly follow.

I think that the idea of transmitting television though the Internet connection is a good idea as long as it doesn’t affect your current internet connection.  I currently pay for an 8mb/s connection but in reality get 2.3 mb/s.  If I had to get my TV through the same connection I imagine the quality to be very low and it would completely block up my connection.  If you had a separate connection to feed the TV signal though, it would be brilliant.  The thing I like about it is that it could be wireless.  You wouldn’t have to have cables draped around your room to get the cable from the dish/aerial to the TV.  All you would need is a wireless router and an adaptor to fit your TV.

But what will IPTV mean apart from not having t have an aerial on our house.  I imagine that it will open up television more to the public.  With the Internet came blogs, and homemade videos on YouTube.  People want to communicate and with advancements in technology comes more and more opportunities to do this.  Will IPTV allow people to produce their own television programmes on their PC’s at home.  Channels could pop up that give people the opportunity to take a time slot to fill with their own thing.  I am not sure if it is possible but I don’t think that it will be very longs until some one comes up with a way of doing it.

The one thing that will have to improve is how fast we can send information.  I have just done a speed test and my upload speed was 0.27mb/s.  At that speed television programmes will not be able to be broadcasted.  We are going to have to look for something faster like SDSL which allows you to upload at a much faster rate.  I am sure that it is going to be quite a few years down the line, but with TV coming through the Internet it wont be too long I am sure.
