Importance of the Internet

July 16th, 2009

How important is access to the Internet.  I am part of the generation that can just remember what life was like before the Internet.  When I was around 7 my Dad brought home our first Microsoft computer complete with a Pentium 75 processor.  At the time it seemed fantastic, but looking back it is nothing now and that was only 15 years ago.

Since that time the Internet has invaded every part of our life.  Where I work we are reliant on using email to communicate with different staff, we have even resorted to ignoring the main text and just putting questions in the title of the email.  It is shown how much businesses are reliant on broadband with the company County Tyrone that was expanding until BT removed the broadband from the area and now it is suffering.

I think that as a minimum every business should be set up with a 2mb connection with a provider that has leased lines to give the reliability needed.  This is the connection speed that the Government is looking to provide everyone in the country with by 2012.  I think it is a very good idea as internet access is getting to a necessity of like, like gas, electricity and water.

With all the broadband providers around today I am surprised that it is not a lot more competitive.  There has been a study showing that only half of consumers are happy with the speed that they get with their connection.  I don’t think it is very fair to charge for an 8mb connection and then only provide a 4mb connection.  I am in this situation; I pay for an 8mb connection but in reality I get between 2 or 3mb.  I am with Sky which offers a 2mb connection which is cheaper but I think if I go down to this level it would get even slower.  I think I am going to ring Sky and find out if it would affect me.
