I officially own a dance mat, I’m ashamed. Actually that’s not the most shameful thing, I own a dance mat high school musical 3 edition for the XBOX 360. I say I own, it is my wife’s and she has wanted one for quite a while.
Back in 2002, fresh out of school, aged just 18; we went with another friend to Great Yarmouth. Back then we were just friends, it was a final goodbye before we left for separate lives at two far apart university; Sheffield and Lancaster. Anyway we didn’t have much money so we stayed in a tiny caravan near the sea front quite a way from everything. We spent our time playing crazy golf, messing about on the beach, drinking a lot of sidekicks and hitting the arcades. This is where we first encountered the arcade dance game where you play against another person and try and put your legs on the right pad in time to the music. It sounds a bit sad… I know …. but it really was great fun. I guess I have particularly fond memories of this holiday as it was my first real taste of freedom before university.
Whilst at University I occasionally went on dance games in my first year with some mates of my course. It was a way of passing the time in between lectures without getting drunk.
The one we have now I have had a few goes on. As it has being a good six year since I last did so it brought back all of these memories. It is also a surprisingly good workout, just a few dances and your sweating like mad and out of breath.
The down side I would say is you need loads of space to use one in your home. Not only the space for the mat itself, but also to have it far enough from the screen to make it easy to see.
I think were long overdue another trip to the South East coast, but this time I think we will avoid the sidekicks!
