The future of the Internet

June 6th, 2009

I don’t think that there is a business out there that isn’t connected to the Internet.  It is pretty much essential nowadays.  Chip and pin devices communicate with banks though the Internet, there are online stores, and most communications are done through email.  It is not just in business where the Internet is essential.  Most Britons will say that the Internet is an essential utility that is needed in modern life.  In order to get everyone connected the Government is considering subsidising the cost of the Internet subscription for people.

Subsidising the cost is not the only thing that has to be done.  Some people are not able to access high speed Internet because of a lack on investment in the countryside.  Because there are a lot more people living in the city compared to the countryside it make more financial sense for companies to invest in the city.  To get over this using Freesat is being considered.  Because overhead or underground cables will not have to be laid, if they can make the technology available to people in the countryside to received Internet though a satellite signal then it would provide the perfect solution.

With the aim at providing 2mbps, how long will it be until that speed is outdated and a faster one is seen as essential?  The use of the Internet is always being pushed in new directions.  When it first came out it was just to look up information of simple webpages.  Now we watch TV that we missed, ring people all over the world, listen to the radio and nearly everything else you can think of.  One direction I can see the Internet going is have video phone calls as common place instead of the normal free skype voice calls.  Unfortunately to do that we will have to send a lot of information to the Internet as well as receive a lot of information.  Unless you are a willing to pay a lot of money your household system is not set up for that.  I think eventually we will all need something like a SDSL connection to keep up with requirements.
