Public houses

June 23rd, 2009

I enjoy going to pubs, whether it’s just me or my wife or with a group of friends, especially this time of year where you can sit outside.  Yesterday I went to the local with a group of friends, it’s a lovely little pub with loads of different real ales to try.  It was a nice evening but I did feel like a little bit of a geek joining in on the conversation about the new BT synergy business phones a friend had installed at his company and how he had saved money by using Brite Telecom.

There are some types of pubs that I will never go in.  The kind that looks dark and gloomy and not welcoming.  Those kinds of pubs make me think that only a local is allowed in.  While living in Milton Keynes we went out for a drive to find a pub (you have to drive everywhere in Milton Keynes) that wasn’t a commercial one in the town centre.  We found one in a little town which looked ok from the outside.  We went in to find our selves in what looked like some ones living room and everyone looked at us strangely, even the bar staff.

This summer we are going in search of river/canal side pubs.  We found one in Coventry but it is a bit far to drive to sit by the side of a river.  This winter we went to a garden centre in Belper and stumbled across a nice looking pub close by which I promised my wife that I would take her one day.

I think my favourite pub is in Nottingham called the Cock and Hoop.  I went with my wife one day and it was so relaxing  to get away from the hustle and bustle of the street to sit in a quite room.
