I have just munched my way though an entire box of bassets liquorice allsorts. I adore liquorice but it does seem to be one of those things that you either love or hate, a bit like marmite or poodles. For the record I personally hate marmite, well twiglets to be precise although my wife does like them and I’m no fan of poodles. I got sent a silly quiz which you had to choose whether you love or hate something and it made me think about differences. I like the Simpsons whilst my wife hates it. My mum is a vegetarian and I could never imagine being one. Many men like football but I couldn’t be less interested.
Initially it surprised me how different my answers were to the other people around me but then I thought how boring life would be if we all liked the same things. Shopping would be very easy though as there would be no choice, just imagine a supermarket with only one brand and none of the stuff that you don’t like.
It does make me laugh when people say that they don’t like something but have never tried it. One of my first ever posts was about trying new things (we made a new years resolution to try as many new things as we could, embrace every opportunity) anyway when my wife when on an activity school trip with her class she was not looking forward to it, she just knew that she was going to hate it. She came back glowing, full of stories about things that she “would never have normally had the chance to do, but absolutely loved”. Since I love food and cooking, that attitude can be quite annoying, I will, within reason (I won’t eat anything endangered) try anything once, so to hate it before you have it seems a little silly. I once even ate worm pate because our university lecturer (mad about earthworms) brought it in and wanted us to try it. What’s the worst that can happen, you don’t like it and you never have it again!
