When I was younger I used to go to a place called Lan Arena on the Nottingham ring road. It used to be an event that happened whenever we had all saved up enough money (which was not that often). Then one of our parents would drop us off at 6pm and then pick us up at 8am the next morning. A whole night of gaming on Counter strike mainly or if we were bored of that there was a weird game where it was a death match with planes, tanks, bikes, blimps, with an assortment of strange weapons.
It has closed down for quite a few years now which is a shame because although may people probably think it’s very geeky (especially back then) I love it.
A couple of weeks ago when I was in Manchester I wandered into HMV looking for a dance mat for the Xbox 360 to find that half of the store had been taken over by a gaming zone. It is designed to be a place for people to test games before they buy them. The Lan arena I went to was a large high speed network of around 30 computers. It also had access to the Internet to play against people in other places. I never used the internet connection, I never saw the point, games need to send and receive a lot of information so without something like SDSL internet it was too laggy.
The new HMV area charges £5 to play for 3 hours. I would prefer if they let you play for around 15 mins for a small charge just.
Online gaming is something I have never tried, my Internet connection is not good enough to be worth it. If I wire my Xbox up then half the time it says the connection is to slow to connect to Xbox live.
Hopefully with there being lots of news about subsidising broadband, fast connections will become cheaper and into my price range.
