Free mobile calls are coming

June 7th, 2009

With the 3 network starting to offer free phone calls using Skype it will not be long until other networks follow.  You have to be using a fast 3g phone so you must be on a quite expensive contract already.  I like the idea of free calls.  I call my wife a lot when I am picking her up from work or seeing what time she will be finished.  At the moment I am happy with my network and I think I get a good deal.  I am on Family Mobile which offers phone calls at 9p per minute and texts for 6p.  I moved from O2 where I was paying 25p per minute.  I am saving over £10 per month by moving networks.

Skype is a type of phone system called Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).  It sends the phone call over the Internet instead of though the normal phone lines.  It is where the future of mobile phone calls is heading.  It is estimated that in 10 years time 50% of all mobile phone calls will be VoIP.

Unfortunately we are going to have to wait a while before it will be common.  The current 3G mobile phones are not good enough and we are going to have to wait until 4G is about.  There is not much chance of me getting it I am not even of 3G yet, and I do not feel any need to either.  Free phone calls may hurry me along though.

I think that it is amazing how far mobiles have come along.  I have a Samsung D900, but I would like to upgrade it to something like and LG viewty, you can never have enough gadgets.  My wife has one and I am very impressed with it, the camera is great and it got a cool touch screen.  It will be awhile until I can afford one.
