A few years ago both my fiancée and I were unemployed at the same time for about a month, it was weird not having anything to do and our lives revolved around food. We planned what we were going to eat, went shopping for it, cooked it and then ate it. My parents in law to be (with whom I spent the majority of the time) said that because our lives had no meaning we turned to food. This was defiantly not true; I can honestly say that I have never been busier and have my passions have not changed. We still spend a great deal of time selecting recipes, shopping and cooking together. I guess that is the key, we both really enjoy cooking. We even enjoy watching programmes about cooking which led us to upgrade our sky package recently (last month) to include the food channel.
I know it’s very easy to find yourself with too much to do, but cooking really isn’t something you can’t fit in. It really doesn’t take up too much time as long as you are sensible. For example a pasta bake, having a pasta dish in a restaurant even one as popular as pizza hut can cost £8.49 (the salmon pasta bake) If you were to recreate this at home using a jar of sauce, a can of salmon and some pasta it wouldn’t cost anything like that and serve more people.
Since we have both found pretty stressful jobs, I can’t deny our eating habits have changed. We spend one of our weekend days or Friday night cooking up a freezer full of main dishes for the week ahead. It may seem like a lot of work but if one week you cook up a big chilli (Jamie Oliver has a brilliant recipe), and a good stew, (you just leave it on the hob to cook and portion it up once finished) its not going to take you long to get a load of ‘ready meals’ sorted for the week.
It’s healthy to have a love of food; what else do you have to do 3 times a day?
