Buying property overseas

June 10th, 2009

It feels like my parents in law are never at home.  When ever my wife talks to them they are always saying they have just been somewhere and are planning to go somewhere else soon.   They have just got back from a trip to Scotland and are planning to go to Newcastle soon for a short break.

One of the reasons they are able to go on so many holidays is that they are involved in timeshare themselves and have a friend that owns a lot of weeks all over the place.  Because their friend owns timeshare as well they are able to share holidays and go together.

I have never been a fan of timeshare, my only exposure to it is in Majorca my parents won a timeshare competition and were told to go to an address to claim it.  When they turned up it was an office that looked like it had been recently abandoned, a lucky escape for my parents I think.

My parents in law took me and my wife to their time share with Seasons in the Lake District.  I was actually very nice.  The apartments were clean, and any problems we had were soon fixed by the staff.  Even though it was nice I do not think it is worth the money.  You have to pay a large sum up front to start with and then pay maintenance that is roughly the same price as hiring a cottage somewhere in the UK.  I would rather go to different places than have to stick with one all the time.

If I was going to invest a lot of money in a holiday place I would definitely want to make an investment in a property overseas.  I would love to have a place in Italy that I could just go to when ever I wanted to.  It is something my parent’s friends have done and they love it.  They used a lot of property guides aims at buying over seas to help them choose a place then visited the area several times before making a choice.
