Going to the zoo

May 15th, 2009

Were going to go to the Zoo this weekend. It’s a real treat for my wife, she loves going to any zoo. This is her first week back to teaching after the holidays so she will need something fun to do. I got the idea about going when she showed my some pictures from a zoo in Thailand of a mother pig feeding some tiger cubs and a mother tiger playing with piglets.

Its a very strange zoo. Apparently they do things like this a lot. They dressed the piglets up in tiger skin so they looked a little more like tiger cubs. Personally I thought it was very cruel. Their going to end up with some very confused pigs and tigers when they grow up, but it started me thinking about zoos in England. I have visited a lot of the Zoos in this country (I still have to visits London and Whipsnade zoos) and I think they are brilliant. I haven’t always thought this, when I was young they used to really upset me seeing animals looking miserable in small cages, but they have come along way since then.

I have a two zoos I am particularly fond of, South Lakes Zoo, and Woburn Safari Park. I went to South Lakes a couple of years a go and all the animals had very nice and large enclosures, with the exception of the Cheaters I thought they could have done with a lot bigger pen. The paths through the Lemur enclosure are not fenced off from the Lemur so they can come as close as they want to. Lemurs are my favourite animal so I could stay in there all day.

I have been to Woburn Safari Park at least 20 times. I lived in Milton Keynes for 6 months which is next door to Woburn. Unfortunately Milton Keynes is and incredibly expensive place to live so i had to move away. While we were there we brought a season pass. For my wife and I it came to £120, but it gave us our weekend entertainment. Every weekend we would go and drive around the monkey, bear and lion enclosures then wander around the rest of the zoo. Its nice to see lions with such a large area to roam freely in. They had huts to shelter in, bushes and trees to hide behind and for shade.

I would definitely recommend buying a season pass to a zoo. Each season pass come with a list of other zoos you can use it to get into free. In the end we went to Chester Zoo, Edinburgh Zoo, and Twycross zoo. We save loads of money and had great fun at the same time.
