Finding opportunities in the recession

May 21st, 2009

Having just got a new job I am still getting emails from lots of recruitment companies with job suggestions, offering to improve my CV and with ways of improving my career in the recession. I have always ignored all these emails because generally they are full of rubbish and insincere promises to work hard finding me a new job. I didn’t really think it was possible to improve your circumstances in the job market, as now is a time to keep your head down and ride out the recession. My wife came home the other day with an interesting story about one of her pupils’ parents.

The parents of a pupil my wife teaches lost their jobs. Having been made redundant they were looking for a new job and they noticed that a local and quite large Jacuzzi/hot tub maintenance company had shut down. There were still all the customers out there that were once relying on the company that now have no one to turn. They quickly retrained using a quick crash course in Jacuzzi maintenance they now run a very successful company and are earning more than they were before.

It goes to show that possibly the way forward is with smaller family run business that does not have such big over heads as the bigger companies. The customers are still out there, it is just there are not enough for larger companies to survive on. In the case of Jacuzzis not enough people are having the really nice bathrooms which have the whirlpool baths and Jacuzzis installed.

The problem is finding the opportunities, in the case of the people above they are driving home one day and saw the shutting down signs. I also think that a good place to look would be the local newspaper for companies that are shutting down.
