We were looking for a place to go this bank holiday and trawled through lots of different websites looking for a list of events and did find much at all. I am always disappointed with the events lists for Nottingham, they never seem to be updated and never have any big events on them. Luckily we stumbled on the website for the Melton Mowbray show. The main picture was a man standing on the back of three horses riding past a huge fire ball so it looked pretty good.
We turned up expecting to find our self in huge queues but were pleasantly surprised, all it took was 10 minutes driving around a car park to find a space and we were in. It cost £5.00 to get in and because the events were taking place in two different sites we were given bright orange paper bracelets to get us in to the other site.
We had brought our own food and we decided to have a picnic next to one of the rivers flowing through Melton, it is a lovely little town and was very nice to sit out watching the ducks swim along the river.
The first event we went to see was the stunt bikes. There were two large ramps and a landing ramp that the bikes used to jump into the air and do tricks. They were really good, they did back flips, superman and lots of other tricks. Unfortunately it had started to rain and the bikes weren’t getting enough grip in the grass so they had to cut it short. We got to see the full show later in the day anyway so it was ok.
In the main arena we went to see the stunt buggies and bikes. They had quad bikes, mini jeeps and mini monster trucks and performed wheelies and donutted around the arena. It ended with a bike driving through a burning wooden structure covered in straw which was great to watch.
We spent a while looking around the town while we waited for the next events. The town has all the normal shops, with a couple of extra pie shops, which is to be expected for the home of the pork pie.
In the afternoon we saw the Viking battle which suffered from the fact that there was no microphone so we had no idea what was going on. We were really lucky to see the horse riding (what we were there to see) because they seemed to of change the times without telling anyone. We arrived at the arena just as it was beginning. They were really good, they did stunts on the back of the horses, they got hats from the audience and picked them up from the floor and ended with the main man going from the saddle, down one side of the horse underneath and back up the other side to get back into the saddle.
My favourite part was seeing the parachute display team. We were in the perfect position as they flew really low right over our heads to get to the landing point, and after they had finished we had the red arrows. I have never seen the red arrows before and was looking forward to see what they did, I was quite disappointed. They just flew over head once in the straight line with no coloured smoke, I thought there was going to be a proper display.
It was a great day and I would recommend next years show to anyone. Its good for all ages as there is a whole range of different activities, including fairground rides, craft fairs and all the events to see. I would recommend taking a packed lunch because for the rural capital centre of food where was
