Uninsured drivers on the increase

April 23rd, 2009

The Government is going to do something about uninsured drivers. They are setting out new legislation to deal with the number of people driving without insurance. At the moment it’s legal to have an uninsured car as long as you don’t drive it. Soon you will have to insure any car that you own. The owners of uninsured cars will receive warning letters informing them they have to get their car insured by a set date, if they fail to do this they will receive a £100 fine and eventually get their car seized. Personally I think it is a very positive move. As a side effect of the recession the number of uninsured drivers has started to increase as people try to save money.

Another area where the recession has caused people to look of less ethical ways to save money is car insurance fraud. Since the start of the recession there has been a 30% increase in the number of fraudulent claims made. Because of this fraud it has added £40 to the average premium for car insurance.

I was in a very minor car accident the other day. A car revered into me, it made a very loud crunching noise but luckily there was no damage and no one was hurt. It did make me wonder if the person could possible claim against me for something like whiplash. My mother was hit by another car; it was the other cars fault. They claimed against her saying she was to blame because she was speeding, and it ended up causing lot of hassle in court. I wouldn’t want to go through something like that. In the end we didn’t even exchange details, something I know you’re not supposed to do, but I couldn’t see anything to claim for.

I hope it is something I never have to go thought; it would make me very angry to think someone was trying to get money they didn’t deserve.
