When I was a child I loved all the gadgets on James Bond. The pens packed with technology. Tiny tracking devices and cameras. Well with advances in technology the cameras and tracking devices now exists. They have also now dropped in price so anyone can afford the spy hardware and software you need to be Bond.
Surveillance is getting more and more common. It’s now impossible to step into a city without being caught on multiple CCTV systems. The amount is quite invasive. The latest invasion of privacy is Google streetview. I am not surprised that this has angered many people around the country, resulting with a Google car being cornered by people from a village it was trying to photograph.
Google is about to take it one step further by buying CCTV images from Westminster Council and the Metropolitan police to add to street view. In the deal Google will pay for the CCTV systems from the two organisations to be integrated and extended.
Not all the surveillance technology is used to spy on people. Advances have meant that companies are able carry out vehicle tracking to help them run their company smoothly. It allows them to see exactly where their vehicles are and how they are progressing. Not only can this allow companies to plan ahead but it also allows them to give customers up to date information about delivery and collection times.
I think overall surveillance if a very good thing. I would like surveillance around my house to deter the children that like to run around our garden at night, but I think it needs to be controlled.
